CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Construction Mechanic William H. Acheson (NSN: 378142), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action, as a member of an Underwater Demolition Team, conducting daylight reconnaissance of the landing beach on enemy-held Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, on 17 February 1944. Less than two hundred yards from the beach, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, and despite intense enemy gunfire, he stood up in an amphibious landing vehicle, calmly took soundings of the water, and placed obstruction and marker buoys in the channel to the beach. The following morning he assisted in guiding the leading assault waves to shore. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
