CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign John Crawford Adams (NSN: 0-265841), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 14 June 1944, as leader of an Underwater Demolition Unit in a daylight reconnaissance of enemy-held Saipan Island beaches. Ensign Adams led his men through prolonged and heavy mortar, machine gun, and sniper fire, which killed and wounded several of his team mates, to within thirty yards of the beach and obtained information of great value to the landing force. His cool and determined leadership was an inspiration to his men. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
