CITATION:

Mention In Despatches : Sergeant Aird was a Platoon Sergeant in B Company, 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment. During the early stages in the battle for Port Darwin and Goose Green on 28/29 May 1982, at night and in fierce fighting, he was to assist his Platoon Commander by co-ordinationg several actions to capture individual enemy trenches. At daybreak his platoon was caught in the open on a forward slope, and after giving covering fire to the remainer of the company they withdrew into cover whilst still under intense enemy fire. During this move one soldier was killed and three injured, including the Company Second in Command. Sergeant Aird immediately and without regard to his own safety, administered first aid, including inserting a drip. His prompt and efficient action undoubtedly saved the lives of the wounded soldiers. He then continued to care for the wounded, as well as other casualties that were brought to him, for a full four hours until they could be evacuated and at the same time he continued his duties as a Platoon Sergeant. During this entire period the enemy continued to engage with machine gun, sniper, artillery and mortar fire, but Sergeant Aird maintained tight discipline and his coolness and calmness were an inspiration to all.
