CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Allen P. Miller (MCSN: 1985062), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Patrol Leader with Company D, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 19 December 1966. While on a nine man reconnaissance patrol deep in enemy controlled territory, Sergeant Miller and his men came to a stream crossing site. Using a raft he went across to the far bank and personally checked for possible attack, leaving a point man as security. Upon returning with the remaining patrol and sensing that they had been followed, he sent six men up the hill to secure a defensive position and retained two men to act as rear security for the others. Immediately, three enemy soldiers, armed with rifles, appeared on the trail below. Having received instructions to try to bring back a prisoner, Sergeant Miller shot low, only wounding his man, while the other two enemy soldiers were killed. The wounded enemy soldier managed to get behind a rock and proceeded to attack with a heavy volume of fire into the position of the two Marines. Completely disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Miller left his position in an attempt to draw the enemy's fire from his comrades, and was mortally wounded. His courageous initiative and gallant spirit of self sacrifice on behalf of his comrades reflected the highest credit upon Sergeant Miller, the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
