Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Dennis G. Murphy (MCSN: 2467070), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with the First Force Reconnaissance Company, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 June 1969, Private First Class Murphy was providing rear security for a long-range reconnaissance patrol forty miles southwest of DaNang when he alertly observed two North Vietnamese Army soldiers approaching the team from the rear. Reacting instantly, he fired on the enemy, killing one soldier and severely wounding the other. Detecting more movement in the same location, he informed the patrol leader and the team deployed to an area offering more cover and concealment. As the team finished establishing a defensive perimeter, it was attacked by a squad-sized hostile force supported by small arms and automatic weapons fire. Skillfully analyzing the situation, Private First Class Murphy boldly moved from his covered position and maneuvered to a more advantageous location ten meters away. When seven North Vietnamese soldiers assaulted the team and temporarily pinned it down, he began to deliver accurate fire on the enemy, killing two hostile soldiers. Private First Class Murphy then became the target of intense fire, but, as the enemy launched another assault on the team's position, he fearlessly fired at the North Vietnamese until he was mortally wounded. His bold initiative and heroic efforts inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of the unit's mission. By his courage, resolute determination and steadfast devotion to duty, Private First Class Murphy upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
