Chindit
By Richard Rhodes James
Stanley Venn-Carr

This was my father. I have visited his grave in Burma three times and hope to go again. It is a long time ago but I so often wonder if anyone who served with him is still alive or if the relatives of his friends are looking out for them.

Have pmd you just to say my father knew him and mentions him several times in his diary for 1943 and March 44 as a junior officer in 69LAA and a Chindit attached to column 20. I am publishing the diary on ww2talk.com if you are interested.

Sorry - I feel very stupid - what is pmd? I couldn't find your father's diary but am v. excited about it!! Can you send me a link?

Hi there, pm= private message.
There is not a lot written in the diary, but it might be interesting to see what is was like without the action! If you go to ww2talk.com and register, you can go to the blog section. It is called Before the Show. It starts in Jan 43 and ends with early late March after the fly in. Your father waved goodbye at the airstrip in India! Apologies for misprints with th name.I think I couldn't read Dads writing and so he is tagged in some places as VENN CANN. I think that his unit came into Burma a bit later . Dad left the 69th in late 43 to join the Chindits ,but they met up again at various points. Unfortunately not documented . I have a couple of photos of officers on the blog somewhere but cant remember if you father is in them. If you have any photos I would be very interested. Good luck.

Hi there, Just got your message. PM = private message!
If you go to ww2talk.com, register, look at blogs...it's called before the show. The last entry is the most recent so you have to look back.
It is from Jan 43 to March 44. Dad left the 69th in October 43 to join the Chindits and later met up with your father as they were about to fly in to Burma. Your father went in a little later I believe. Apologies for misreading the diary and naming him and tagging him as Venn Cann. There is a photo there but can't remember if your father is there. If you have any photos or documents I would be interested in seeing them. The ww2 site is a great resource, the people there are very knowledgable and helpful. I have to say I haven't been able to discover much about 69th after the end of the diary but you may be able to. They certainly went in afterwards. Hope you enjoy the diary. It shows the life of a low rank officer before the main action took place and is quite amusing in parts, if a bit long winded!

Photo

Helen, yes there is a photo of your father, I put a couple of photos up as part of the blog and he is in the first one. Hope you have managed to access it, but let me know if not.
