1968 06 14 O-2 1LT Charles S. Beranek 31542 KIA SVN; Beranek had been assigned as XO of ODA-332, Minh Thanh, Binh Long Province for nearly a year and had completed his tour. On the morning of June 14, 1968, he said good bye to his team and caught a ride on a resupply helicopter to clear the B team, B-33 at Hon Quan (An Loc) Binh Long Province. LT Beranek spent the day clearing the B team and was to catch the same resupply helicopter to the C team in Bien Hoa later that day, after the helicopter had made all of its runs to the surrounding A camps. Late that afternoon, the resupply helicopter pilot called in, said he was a few minutes out and anyone needing a ride to the C team should assemble on the B-33 helicopter pad. LT Beranek and a few other passengers were waiting on the helicopter pad when several 82MM mortar rounds impacted nearby. Shrapnel severed LT Beranek's carotid artery and he died a few minutes later.
Information was from Don J. Taylor, a friend and former army brother, who was there the day Charles died. |
