ZSU Operation Copper

Military Medal : Spr Dennis was a member of a Special Intelligence Party of 2 Offrs and 6 ORs operating in MUSCHU Island from night 11/12 Apr 45 until 17 Apr 45 during which time they were continuously harassed by Japanese Patrols. Spr DENNIS was the only member of the party to return.

In one action with Japanese Spr DENNIS became separated from other members in the party and for several days searched the island in an effort to locate the other members of the party and continued to obtain intelligence information.

In clashes with enemy patrols Spr Dennis alone shot seven Japanese and destroyed one .5 HMG.

On Apr 17th apr DENNIS reached CAPE PUS after eight hours swimming using a beam to assist him.

On 20 Apr Spr DENNIS contacted a patrol of 2/7 Aust Commando Sqn near KEMUDU. After arrival at Cape Pus and until he contacted the patrol, Spr DENNIS had further clashes with the enemy patrols and killed one more of the enemy. Throughout the whole time Spr DENNIS retained possession of his SMG, ammunition, security documents continued to obtain and record all possible intelligence data despite lack of rations which necessitated his living off the country from 13 to 20 April 1945.

Owing to Spr DENNIS' maintenance of the object of the operation, combined with great courage, determination and initiative, information was obtained, which was available to 6 Aust Div for further operations in Wewak area.
