My father, James “ Pondy” Pond, no 2 troop, C section, one SAS, drove the Jeep for Titus Oats. He liked and had a lot of respect for Titus Oats and said to me once that he couldn’t understand why he wasn’t mentioned more in the books on the WW2 SAS.
He was my father-in-law for a while. He had terrible tinnitus from being blown out of his jeep, never collected his medals, as far as he was concerned it was just a job that needed doing. Although he used to get very angry about later SAS members writing books, he would share his stories from the war. His wife told me of a time he was giving a talk at the Lions club (he did a lot for them) and when he'd finished what he'd prepared there were loud calls for more. He passed away in his early 90's, a gentleman and a lovely Grandpa to my children and their cousins.
