SIKORSKY HH-53C SUPER JOLLY GREEN GIANT (REGISTRATION: 69-5792)
The H-53 community suffered another loss on 27 July 1982 when HH-53C #69-5792 crashed while on a training sortie at Kirtland. The crew had conducted night refueling training and was descending for a low-level navigation leg when the aircraft impacted the ground and was destroyed. The crew—Maj Barry Walls, Capt Pat Behnke, 1st Lt Hardy Delay, and SSgt Aylwyn Fortner—were all killed. Walls was a veteran of the Mayaguez mission and had flown with Captain Connelly on the fateful Pave Low III rescue in Albuquerque two and a half years prior. It was a terrible loss to the H-53 community
