CITATION:

Navy Cross : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private First Class Wilfred A. Hunt (MCSN: 290821), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with Company D, FIRST Marine Raider Battalion, during the landing assault and seizure of enemy Japanese-held Tulagi Island, British Solomon Islands, on 7 August 1942. With hostile machine-gun fire holding up the forward movement of his squad, Private First Class Hunt, on his own initiative and at great risk to his life, rushed the enemy position and, unaided, destroyed the Japanese machine-gunners with hand grenades. His great personal valor and fearless, determined action in effectively removing the threat to his squad and clearing the way for its further advance, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Platoon Sergeant Wilfred A. Hunt (MCSN: 290821), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, First Marine Raider Battalion, in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, while aggressively leading his squad in the destruction of strong Japanese positions and the capture of a hostile, light machine gun on 8 July 1943.
