CITATION:

Bronze Star With "V" Device : For heroism in connection with ground operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Hayward distinguished himself on 22 March 1971 while serving as a member of a Ranger team during a reconnaissance mission in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. While on patrol, Specialist Hayward observed two enemy soldiers near his team's position. When the enemy compromised his team's position, he successfully engaged the enemy. Specialist Hayward continued to fire his grenade launcher pinning the enemy down. Repeatedly exposing himself, he maneuvered to direct effective suppressive fire on the enemy. As he ran forward, engaging the enemy and resupplying his element with ammunition, he was mortally wounded. Specialist Four Hayward's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
