Jimmie entered the U.S. Air Force on August 1, 1957. He attended Chinese language school at Yale University, graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1963, and became an Air Force pilot. After 34 years in the Air Force he retired as a Colonel in 1991. During his career he spent a year in Vietnam as a Helicopter gunship pilot for special operations where he was awarded the Silver Star, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 10 Air Medals. He has travelled to 40 nations and had tours in Hawaii, Nevada, twice in Germany, a total of 20 different locations. Along the way he met Jimmy Doolittle, Vice President George Bush Sr., Bob Hope and many others because he was in the right place at the right time.
He received a master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Ohio. His career highlights included the Vietnam War, the 1973 Israeli War, flying the C-5 Galaxy the largest aircraft in the world at the time and working with the men and women he met along the way on his many Air Force assignments
