Bronze Star : For heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as SEAL Platoon Leading Chief Petty Officer with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit West in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in Iraq from 27 September 2003 to 5 April 2004. Chief Beiriger inspirational leadership and invaluable counsel enabled his SEAL Task Unit to maintain a substantial combat advantage over the enemy. He was central to the planning and execution of 49 high risk combat missions, operating under the constant threat of small arms, mortar, and Improvised Explosive Device attacks for 151 days. Under his guidance, his team captured 20 High value targets. His calm demeanor and discretion with deadly force in the midst of chaotic situations were directly responsible for saving the lives of non-combatants intermixed with the enemy. On a time sensitive assault on an Iraqi Army camp believed to be harboring 25 Mujahideon, his 29-man assault force inserted via two MH-53 helicopters and assaulted a large military barracks complex of 11 buildings and more than 275 rooms. Chief Beiriger led the maneuver element toward the target and immediately encountered two men standing next to AK-47 rifles. They cleared five buildings, secured 33 adult males, engaged in several hand-to-hand engagements, and recovered loaded assault rifles and automatic weapons. With speed, surprise and violence of action, Chief Beiriger's team secured an encampment of more than 100 people without firing a single shot. By his courageous actions, personal initiative, and loyal dedication to duty, Chief Beiriger reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
