CITATION:

Military Cross : Lieut. BYRNE has led a sec of this Unit from Oct 42 to Nov 43 and has fought with it at WAU, MUBO, BENA BENA and the RAMU VALLEY. He has shown at all times strong leadership and splendid courage for which he is recognised by every officer and man in the unit.

In two actions in particular this officer demonstrated great offensive spirit in face of heavy casualties, and performed great feats of courage and endurance in his attempts to get out wounded men.

His skill and coolness in evading enemy positions and patrols in his penetration reconnaissances have been responsible for the collection of valuable data of enemy dispositions and plans. On such patrols this officer has endured great hardships and shown devotion to duty to an extraordinary extent.
