CITATION:

Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct : On Friday 8th May, 1965, dissidents were reported in the ground control area of the SHAIRI plateau. This resulted in an airstrike which caused unexplained explosions. Major CAMPBELL, OC 'X' Company then as AD DIMNAH, was ordered to mount an operation to search the villages of DEREBE and AL KHARIBA to find out the result of the airstrike and search for possible dissidents or ammunition dumps. Major CAMPBELL planned and executed a very competent and thorough operation which resulted in large stores of dissident ammunition being destroyed.

On 13th/14th May, AD DIMNAH was heavily attacked by dissident mortars. Thanks to Major CAMPBELL's realistic precautions and extreme steadiness under fire counter mortar fire was brought quickly on the enemy mortar position which ceased fire after 16 rounds were fired. It was later confirmed that casualties had been caused to the dissidents. He then quickly established the extent of the damage and casualties and sent a very concise and coherent sitrep which enabled helicopter evacuation of casualties to be arranged. During and after the action Major CAMPBELL's steadying influence quickly controlled the damage and ensured that the casualties received the best attention.

It is considered that Major CAMPBELL's conduct is well worthy of official recognition.
