CITATION:

Bronze Star : for heroic conduct on 30 April 1945, about one-half mile from ***, GERMANY. When his platoon was pinned down by 20mm and small arms fire from the flank, Staff Sergeant CANTRELL left a covered position for a completely exposed spot and drew intense small arms fire in order to locate the enemy guns which were holding up his platoon's advance. After locating the guns, Staff Sergeant CANTRELL immediately placed fire of two machine guns on the area and maneuvered his men towards the flank, then quickly and aggressively closed in a destroyed the enemy force by killing three and capturing four. Staff Sergeant CANTRELL's alert, aggressive leadership and courage were in keeping with the honored traditions of the United States Airborne Forces.
