Member of the 1st Infantry Battalion(Darby's Rangers)in WW II. Rank: Private 1st class. Serial Number 12191980. Fought in Algeria, Tunisia (Presidential Unit Citation at El-Guettar), Sicily; wounded in Gela, Sicily (10 July 1943). Awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Reported in the Pearl River, NY Orangetown Telegram 20 Aug 1943. Participated in the Italian mainland campaign at Salerno (Presidential Unit Citation), Cassino, Anzio, and at Cisterna di Latina where the Rangers were annihilated on 30 January 1944. Nicholas died in a military hospital in Pozzuoli, Italy 18 days before his 20th birthday. He was a member of the Class of 1946 at Bucknell University prior to enlisting in the army in 1942.
