Participated in the Italian mainland campaign at Salerno (Presidential Unit Citation), Cassino, Anzio, and at Cisterna di Latina where the Rangers were annihilated on 30 January 1944. Nicholas died in a military hospital in Pozzuoli, Italy 18 days before his 20th birthday.
