Im looking for information on my grandfather Hugh John Marks, 110478, 1st Bn., York and Lancaster Regiment, killed in action 24th April 1943 in Norway. Any information or photographs of the regiment would be great. I have been looking into my family history and i have found limited information about my grandfather so far.

Hi Angela

Did you spot this post in the press last year where your Grandfather is mentioned and detail about his death and subsequent scattering of his ashes found in the diary of a local Padre at RAF Kinloss:

Best wishes and hope you find more

Hi Pete.

Thank you so much for the link, i had no idea this information excisted! Do you know of any archives that may contain photographs of my grandfathers regiment or even old film files? I am new to researching this kind of information, all i have found until now is that information is classified etc etc.

Once again, Thank you so much for the link in your message!

Angela

Hi again Angela

Contact details for John Main, the Councillor featured in that article, can be found here ( contact him either via the office number or email address to the Secretary )

Whilst his Regiment is great to research, have you done any research at all on his involvement with the Special Operations Executive? He was obviously involved in the "Shetland Bus" and Norway operations. As you have some contacts through that article that's where I would start. At the same time I would apply for a copy of his Army Service Record. Here is a link on how to do so. Apply straight away as their is a lengthy delay of of 9 or 10 months for results to come through at the moment:

Here is a transcript of a lecture given about the Shetland Bus by Dr D M Henderson, Fellow of Queens? College, Cambridge. There are good references for his research at the end of the article:

http://www.scotsatwar.org.uk/AZ/shetlandbus.htm

There is a book called The Shetland Bus by David Howarth, Lieutenant-Commander R.N.V.R. which is one of the references. I have never read it and have no idea where or if you can get a copy, but it is meant to be excellent

Hi,
If you go to Amazon uk web site and type in 'The Shetland Bus' you have a good choice of the David Howarth book. The book is a very good read and published back in 1991 and another in 1998 by Howarth and Kjell Colding.

Kind regards,

Dave

Sorry I din't see your posting.I have now added his photo. Also he has an SOE personal file in the National Archives. Will try to find the reference number.
John

Hello John, sorry it has taken so long to reply. Have you found the reference number of the personal file? I do have some files containing info but i am sure there is more to be found.
Many thanks

Angela
It might be an idea to also put your request for information on WW2talk.com, if he was SOE. There is a member on there who goes by the username of Jedburgh22 who is a wealth of knowledge on WW2 and may already have the SOE file, or if not he can point you in the right direction.
I may also have a copy of the 'Shetland Bus' somewhere in one of my many boxes of books - if you want me to have a look for it let me know

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks, i will sign up now!
That would be great, i have been looking in local bookshops and found nothing so far, let me know.
Also, could you direct me to any other info concerning SOE and the shetland bus or even the Norwegian dealings with the Shetland bus.
Thanks for your help
Angela

My mother, Brigid Curtis, is Hugh Mark's niece and recalls her mother (Hugh's sister) talking about him skiing in Norway. I am just doing some research on it, as she has read the David Howarth book and I have just bought her The Shetland Bus Man by Iverson hoping to find some more information as we know so very little about it.
The above links will be really useful to us - so thank you very much!
Angela, we must be related as Hugh would be my great uncle. I am looking forward to finding out more about such a brave man, although it fills me sadness too.

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for posting the information. I have just ordered the book and really looking forward to reading it. I visited Stockholm only a couple of years ago and would have loved to have known at the time! Any other information or sources would be gratefully received.

Hi Andrew,
Thank you so much for the recommendation for 'Sweet is War' . My mother and I have just finished reading it. It was a brilliant read and so exciting to read about Hugh Marks (my great uncle) and his role at the Stockholm embassy. The Himmler plot was particularly intriguing. It has made us eager to find out more! I would love to know how he escaped from Norway to Stockholm and more details about his time there. Anyone out there with more information?
