CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Louis J. Carpellotti (MCSN: 294497), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company C, First Marine Raider Battalion during the attack against enemy Japanese forces on Tulagi, Solomon Islands, on 7 August 1942. In the face of heavy enemy fire, Private First Class Carpellotti led a detachment of his squad to a point where they could deliver a flanking fire on the Japanese, thereby enabling the remainder of his squad to assault and seize the hostile position. His great personal valor was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the defense of his country.
