CITATION:

Distinguished Service Cross : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade Rex D. Clark, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Ranger Infantry Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944 in France. On that date, Technician Clark was in command of an amphibious vehicle equipped with an extension ladder and mounting three machine guns which was to be used by the assault forces to scale the high cliffs near Pointe De Hoc, France. Then it was found that the vehicle could not reach the cliffs because of the rough terrain, Technician Clark gallantly ordered himself raised on the ladder, and firing his machine gun at the hostile emplacements, effectively diverted the return fire away from the assault troops. Through his intrepid actions, two enemy automatic weapons were neutralized and many of the enemy pinned down, enabling friendly forces to advance on their objective. Technician Clark's heroic actions and unselfish devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
