CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Warren Williams Cobley (ASN: RA-16636769), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Detachment A-244, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, in the Republic of Vietnam on 7 July 1966. Sergeant First Class Cobley was leading a patrol through dense jungle when he spotted well camouflaged enemy positions further up the trail. As he dispersed his men from the path, the entire group came under intense hostile automatic weapons fire. Realizing that unless the enemy was quickly killed, friendly casualties would be heavy at such close range, Sergeant Cobley immediately rallied his men and charged the hostile emplacements. As he advanced through the dense jungle firing his rifle and shouting encouragement, Sergeant Cobley was twice wounded by the heavy enemy fire. Undaunted by the intense pain from his wounds, Sergeant Cobley and his patrol overran the enemy bunkers and routed the defenders. Although he was the most seriously wounded, Sergeant Cobley refused to be evacuated until his wounded comrades were given medical assistance. Sergeant Cobley's dauntless courage in close combat and outstanding devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
