CITATION:

Military Cross : At Mount SANCHIL, CHEREN Area on 16th March 1941, at 0430 hours, 2/Lieutenant DEXTER led his platoon to attack a small fort. Moving silently he cut the enemy wire in front of the enemy position and reached the fort without arousing the attention of the enemy. 2/Lieutenant DEXTER then led the assault by throwing all of his grenades in to the fort and, when this was complete, he seized a Bren gun which failed to fire, and then took a rifle and bayonet with which he fired on the enemy, whilst moving to cover the assault of his platoon.

Although wounded in the face and arm, he continued to encourage and lead his men by an excellent example of courage and determination. Finding the Fort was more strongly held than originally anticipated, he was forced to five the order to retire, which was conducted in an orderly manner in spite of the fact that most of his men were wounded by enemy fire and grenades.

Although this raid did not achieve its object in clearing the ridge on Mount SANCHIL and establishing a foot-hold on top for the remainder of the unit to exploit, 2/Lieutenant DEXTER organized and let the raid with utmost valour and determination in the face of tremendous odds.
