CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Elwood L. Dorman (ASN: 33504795), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion, V Corps, in action on the coast of France on 6 June 1944.

On the strongly fortified enemy-held beach near Vierville-sur-Mer, France, Private First Class Dorman, a rifleman, landed under a devastating and withering hail of enemy machine gun, sniper, artillery, and mortar fire from strategically located positions commanding the cliffs overlooking the beach. After crossing the open beach to the protection of a seawall, where the advance of the entire battalion was halted by thick wire entanglements, covered by enemy fire, Pfc. Dorman left the protection of the seawall and with a comrade worked his way forward through intense fire and blew a gap in the tactical wire with a bangalore torpedo.

With utter disregard for his own personal safety he rushed through the gap in full view of the enemy and pointed the way for the remainder of company and battalion, thus enabling them to move forward and successfully secure the beachhead.
