CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Justin G. Duryea (MCSN: 0-6114), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 5 to 9 March 1945. When his Battalion Commander became a casualty, Lieutenant Colonel Duryea assumed command and, in the face of heavy enemy shellfire, courageously led his men until he was seriously wounded while on a reconnaissance in front of his own lines. By his able leadership, sound tactical judgment and tireless devotion to duty, he served as an inspiration to the officers and men of his Regiment and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
