ENVELOPE/BLUE Mission, north italy, 1945

Don't worry Micky, these projects take time and I know how short time is with work and family to try and fit in.
As and when mate, no worries
Steve

Micky, I realise this is an old thread but I am the the daughter of Capt John Lees mentioned. I am trying to find out as much info as possible re what part he took in Envelope. I am at start of my search due to only just obtaining info released by national archives on 1st January this year (what would have been his 100th birthday.

Hi Jeanette
Steve Andrews here glad to see this thread has been of use, you obviously have your Fathers book he wrote ?
Another book that will help you try and sort out the difficult connections between the missions and personel is David Stafford's "Mission Acomplished" which has only just been released. It covers the time your Father was active in Italy.
Reading his book shows a man of great courage and strength, you must be very proud.
Kind Regards
Steve

Hi there, thanks for that. My father was actually Capt John Lees who, if you look at the 6th of 7th post by Micky above, is mentioned as taking over command from Michael Lees. Rather confusing but they weren't related. I am sure I can remember Michael Lees coming up in conversations so I believe they did know each other. I was aware of Michael Lees' book and am trying to get a copy and will also now try and get a copy of the other book as I know my father was mentioned in a book about this time but have yet to find it. My father died in the early 1980's when I was only 20 so trying to piece together what happened during his time with SOE is mainly down to info I can find in documents, archives and dim memories of what he told me. Any info that can help is gratefully received.
Regards
Jeanette

Hi Jeanette
Ops my mistake, yep there are quite a few names that are very similar with SOE agents.
I'm coming at the research from the RAF dropping agents side of things with the 148 special duties squadron that was base in North Africa and then Brindisi in Southern Italy. But I am trying to match the Agents/Missions they dropped to the 148 aircrew. As well as the story of one crew who a friend was a member of.
I suggest you look up and join a Yahoo group I am a member of, "specialoperationsexecutive" its ran by a chap called Steven Kippax and is a great forum on all things SOE but as you are finding out there is loads of stuff on Northern Europe especially France, a little on the Balkans but not so much on Italy compare to them. It would be great to be kept informed on how you get on and I would love to know how you Father went into his mission if you find out. I will keep my eyes open for his name and go back over Micheal Lee's book to see what there is on your Father, if you let me have a direct E mail I could scan anything relative and sent it over.
All the Best
Steve

Hi all,
Just found site.
As per post from Jeanette, I have just started to look for information on what my father (Hugh Mcglade POW in the picture) did in italy. I think with most of his generation, My father did not talk about what happend to him and what he did.
My father received a letter from E Wilcockson after the war I think we still have. will look.
Can anyone help with the process of getting more information from war records.
We still have his pay book.
My sister sent and received his medals, But no Italy star.

I would be very greatful of any informaion that could be given (good or bad)
I did not know the young man that went to war. Just a loving father.
Would Mr Bruno Gimpel have know of my father?

Regards Colin Mcglade

Good luck with your search Colin. If I find any mention of your father's name I will of course let you know via this thread!

Regards
Jeanette

Dear Colin and jeannette, is really a pleasure meet you two on this forum!!

Jeannette, i must have a picture of your father taken at Reggio on 24 april 1945, the day the partisan take the town. He is with some members of the partisan HQ, my email is cusnaATkatamailDOTcom, write me and i'll sent the picture in reply.

I can also get in touch both you and Colin with Mr. Bruno Gimpel, wich was the Michael Lees cypher officer, but i guess he's in vacation until the edn of august.

Also Gino Beer is still alive, but not i good shape as Bruno: he often forget past and recent think, depend day by day. Gino worked with "Ugo", as he call McGlade, for almost a year, as messenger for the british mission. They often walked trough the appennines occasionally shooting the germans and often keeping Wilcockson and Lees in touch with the other BLOs in the area! Feel free to write me!

Colin,
Contact cusna@katamail.com This is "Micky's" email address. He is a historian with info about envelope. He is very keen to hear from you. I received a photo of my father from him this week and I am sure he has information about your father.

Regards
Jeanete

Hi All
Great to see the thread picked up again, just back from holiday. Colin a good place to get information as to where to look for SOE records etc is a yahoo group dedicated to promoting the research and the remembering of the men and women who gave so much in those days.
Its ran by Steven Kippax who would be great in pointing you in the right direction for info and records, his second home seems to be TNA at Kew.
If you send me an E mail (3drews AT tiscali.co.uk) with a brief description of what you are looking for and background history of your Dads story I will forward it onto him.
All the Best
Steve A (F for Freddy)
