CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Engineman First Class John Samuel Fallon, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Sea-Air-Land Team TWO (SEAL-2) serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong aggressors in the Mekong Delta Region of the Republic of Vietnam on 20 March 1969. As Provincial Reconnaissance Unit (PRU) Advisor, Petty Officer Fallon led his unit on a heliborne assault deep into an enemy controlled area. He selected his target and coordinated with the Vietnamese Province Chief, the United States helicopters and all other supporting forces. The PRU force came under intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire from the well-entrenched enemy unit, resulting in two members of the PRU being seriously wounded. In complete disregard for his own personal safety, he left his position of cover and darted across the rice paddy until he reached his wounded where he administered first aid and radioed for a MEDEVAC helicopter. Then, while still under intense enemy fire, he single-handedly carried the more seriously wounded PRU to the helicopter. He rallied his PRU and led an assault on the enemy positions resulting in four Viet Cong killed, one Viet Cong captured and the capture of two enemy rocket launchers. Petty Officer Fallon's heroic performance under extremely dangerous circumstances won for him the undying devotion of his PRU and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
