Hi all,

I've just begun to try and trace the military experiences of my grandfathers brother Fred Senior (number 2696965) who was killed 15th Jan 1943 while serving in 1 SAS in North Africa.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with any information they have or any tips. I'd like to understand how he came to end his life - the operation he was on.

Any info you have would be gratefully received.

Sam

Yes. I have one from 1940 which was taken when he was in the UK, but not from his time in N Africa though. I think its from when he was in the Scot's Guards. I can post if you like.

with that ate, it might be he died on operation agreement which was a mass raid on Benghazi and tobruk. that went wrong. if you tap operation agreement into amazon serch engine you get at least two books. that probably your best port of call to start into his death. also you might look into the regimental histories of 1 sas in the public records office. also get his record released from glasgow army records office. that should keep you busy for a while

Thanks Geronimo. I'll do all that.

How do i go about getting the regimental histories? where can I find them? How do i contact the glasgow army records office?

Hi Sam,

Your Fred may be one of the guys present in a group photo with my uncle, upon the back of which he had written the names of the others. I had read one as "Jed" but it may well have been Fred. I intend to send copies of a few photos to John Robertson to post on this site shortly, but if you like I'll forward a copy of the photo (it was taken in North Africa).

I'm also in the process of obtaining my uncle's service records from the MOD, after which time I intend to contact the SAS Reg. Assoc.

As far as the National Archives are concerned, one of the references for the War Diaries of SAS (and 8 commando, which my uncle was in prior to L Det) is WO 218. But you would either need to hire a researcher at TNA or pay a visit to Kew yourself in order to read/obtain copies of relevant files. They are not digitised. I hope to get to Kew myself at some point, so when I do I'll let you know..

I will ask my uncle he is 93 and lives in Australia name Jock McDiarmid although he is getting very muddled now about everything Diana
