CITATION:

Bronze Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" to Lieutenant Commander John T. Green, United States Navy, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy as SEAL Team **** Task Unit **** Commander in direct support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM from April to September 2009. Lieutenant Commander Green stood-up the first Naval Special Warfare Task Unit to operate in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM since 2005. On 19 July 2009, he learned that an Army Special Forces and a Jordanian Special Operations Force Unit had been ambushed in a remote section of Zabul province. They had suffered three serious casualties and were surrounded by a numerically superior force. He immediately volunteered Task Unit **** to conduct an in-extremis mission to rescue the ambushed personnel. Lieutenant Commander Green led his Task Unit in an air assault into a ridgeline overlooking the surrounded units. During a day-long combined arms battle, Task Unit **** broke several waves of attacks on the pinned down forces. His decisive combat leadership resulted in 22 Enemy Killed in Action and the safe extraction of all personnel. Throughout his six month combat tour, Lieutenant Commander Green displayed exemplary combat prowess as the Ground Force Commander for 21 missions. These missions resulted in 189 Enemy Killed in Action, six High Value Individuals captured and $1.3 billion in enemy narcotics, weapons and explosive material destroyed. Lieutenant Commander Green's extraordinary guidance, zealous initiative and total dedication to duty reflected great credit upon him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (The Combat Distinguished Device is authorized.)
