CITATION:

Military Medal : Guadagazal 16 Sep 42. While in charge of the forward post of House Mambu after the Japanese occupation of Mubo he returned to our old W/T station on the Saddle and retrieved a battery charger motor left there by our troops when withdrawing.

He brought this charger back to House Mamba. The following day a Japanese patrol, 40 strong with natives, came up obviously looking for the charger.

Hulcup had only 3 men with him and ordered them back to House Banana to warn the small section there. He himself hid the motor in the bush and remained in observation although before entering the area the Japs subjected it to heavy mtr and MG fire. With the assistance of the natives the Japs found the motor and withdrew to Mubo. Hulcup immediately returned to the area where he found and deloused three 36 grenade booby traps. He then collected all remaining gear and while proceeding to hide it in the bush tripped another 56 grenade booby trap. By quick reaction in diving into the bush he saved himself although the dixie in his hand was punctured by shrapnel.

He also participated in Heaths Raid, 30 Jun 42, Mubo raids 1 Oct 42 and 10 Jan 43 and in the Jap Attack on Wau on 28 Jan 43.
