DATE OF DEATH:

10-Nov-1943

CITATION:

Military Cross (pre-SAS) : On 26th March 1943 during the advance of the 1st Armoured Division on EL HAMMA, Lt. Jackson was commanding the leading troop of Shermans of the Queen's Baye. After passing through the NZ Div final objective at about 1800 hrs his troop was constantly under heavy Anti-Tank fire from the front and both flanks. By the fire of his troop he destroyed many Anti-Tank guns which were holding up the advance and enabled a steady forward movement to be continued. Just before last light his tank was hit and disabled. He immediately got into another tank of his troop and again led the advance when it re-commenced at midnight. His tank was again hit by an 88mm at about 250 yds; in spite of this he continued to fight his tank and by accurate Browning fire forced the enemy to abandon the gun.

On the morning 27th during the advance in daylight both the remaining tanks of his troop were hit by heavy HE and caught fire. Regardless of the heavy shelling he supervised the removal of the wounded from both tanks and collected morphia from another tank, finally shepherding both crews back to safety.

His coolness, courage and determination throughout were an example to all who saw him.
