CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles Howard Johnson (MCSN: 2062309), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company D, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 13 June 1969, Sergeant Johnson was preparing to deploy his six-man reconnaissance patrol into observation positions at a road junction in the vicinity of Mai Loc in Quang Tri Province when a large group of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers moved into the area. Reacting instantly he halted all movements and directed his men to remain silent until the enemy passed. When the hostile force stopped only ten meters from his position, Sergeant Johnson commenced firing his weapon and killed two enemy soldiers before they could open fire on his patrol. With complete disregard for his own safety, he remained in the open road and drew enemy fire while his men maneuvered to covered positions. Continuing his efforts, Sergeant Johnson was delivering effective suppressive fire against the large hostile force when he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions inspired his fellow Marines and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his courage, superb leadership and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant Johnson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
