CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Ronald L. Kunkle (ASN: 20702964), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company *, ** Ranger Battalion, in action on ** July 1943, at ** Beach three miles northwest of ***, Sicily. On that date an enemy strong point manned by about fifteen men, was holding up the advance of Company *, and the establishment of a bridgehead. A section sergeant was ordered to take the position, but was temporarily put out of action. First Sergeant Kunkle immediately took over the section and successfully led the attack against the enemy strong point. First Sergeant Kunkle incurred shrapnel wounds from enemy fire while leading this attack. His initiative and courage under fire were an inspiration to his men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
