CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade Harold E. Lotze (ASN: 39169521), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy near Dulmen, Germany, on 29 March 1945. Technician Fourth Grade Lotze was supervising the evacuation of wounded from an area under extremely heavy enemy fire from both small arms positions and self-propelled guns when a soldier was wounded within fifteen yards of an enemy held house. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Technician Fourth Grade Lotze went across an open field to the aid of his wounded comrade. He gave his life attempting to drag the wounded man to a place of protection. His unhesitating courage and self-sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces.
