CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Alexander J. Matisick (ASN: 35275929), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 7 June 1944, near ****, France. In order that supporting aircraft might bring effective fire on the enemy, Technician Fifth Grade Matisick moved beyond the front lines into enemy territory to lay signal panels. He performed this act successfully under intense sniper, artillery and small arms fire. On the return trip, he saw a comrade lying wounded. With utter disregard for his own safety, and with snipers shooting at him, Technician Fifth Grade Matisick went to the wounded man and was carrying him to safety when a sniper wounded him mortally. The gallantry of this act, which was beyond the call of duty, was an inspiration to his comrades and in keeping with the glorious traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
