Dominic May joined the Royal Marines in 1983, serving as a marine and, after his Junior Command Course, a corporal in 40 Commando. He commissioned in 1989 before troop commanding in Northern Ireland, Norway, Brunei and Iraq on Operation Haven in 1991.
Specialising as a mountain leader in 1992, he commanded 40 Commando’s reconnaissance troop and, in 1995, completed an operational tour of Bosnia with 20 Armoured Brigade. He served next in Headquarters 5 Airborne Brigade before, in 1997, returning to the Commando Training Centre to command the Junior Command Course.
Promoting to major in 1999, he became SO2 Individual Training in Headquarters Royal Marines.
He was appointed to 42 Commando in 2001 to command Mike Company on operations in South Armagh, Northern Ireland and Iraq on Operation Telic 1.
A year at the Royal Military College of Science followed and he qualified as a Master of Defence Administration in 2004.
Promoting to lieutenant colonel in 2004, he became the Royal Marines Corps Drafting Officer in the Directorate of Naval Career Management.
In 2006, he returned to the Commando Training Centre to command Commando Training Wing. There followed a year as the Royal Marines Corps Colonel with responsibility for establishing an enduring programme of UK wide Royal Marines recruiting, selection and outreach activities in support of Director Naval Recruiting.
In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff, Headquarters 3 Command Brigade and completed deployments to Norway, USA and Afghanistan on Operation Herrick 14 in 2011.
