Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) James Edward McGinity (ASN: 0-23257), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 6 June 1944, near ****, France. Landing in Normandy by parachute on D-Day, Major McGinity displayed great qualities of initiative and leadership in assembling his battalion and leading them to their initial objective in the face of intense enemy fire. With no regard for his personal safety, Major McGinity moved among his men despite heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire, and by his example inspired his men to withhold the fierce enemy counter-attacks. In moving forward to where he could better aid his battalion commander, Major McGinity lost his life, but his devotion to duty, gallantry and aggressive spirit are still an inspiration to his men. Major McGinity's conduct was in keeping with the high traditions of the Airborne Forces.
