CITATION:
Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Boatswain's Mate (SEAL) Jody L. McIntyre, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a member of a special operations unit conducting combat operations against Al Qa'ida and Taliban forces in Afghanistan from 2 to 8 March 2002. Inserting under erratic enemy fire, Chief Petty Officer McIntyre led his five-man element through some of the most rugged, snow covered, mountainous landscape on the continent. His team achieved operational effects completely out of proportion to its size. His orders were to confirm or deny enemy presence, isolate the area in order to deny enemy movement, and preclude the enemy from concentrating combat power against friendly ground forces. Chief Petty Officer McIntyre's aggressive leadership enabled the resumption of momentum of the largest U. S. military operation since the Persian Gulf War and the most significant ground operation to date in the war against terrorism. His actions were pivotal to this battle and cannot be overstated. Chief Petty Officer McIntyre's element identified innumerable and previously unseen enemy fortifications, ground patrols, and fighting positions overlooking the Shaki Kot Valley. Through seven days of exhaustive Terminal Guidance Operations, his team directed the destruction of countless enemy targets by massive ordnance loads from every air strike platform in the inventory. By his courage under fire, bold leadership, and complete dedication to duty, Chief Petty Officer McIntyre reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
