CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Eddy McLaughlin (ASN: 0-1308754), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 6 June 1944, near ****, France. Dropping into France on D-Day, Second Lieutenant McLaughlin's platoon became the assault element of the company. Five hundred yards from the objective the platoon leader became a casualty and Second Lieutenant McLaughlin took command of the unit. Exposing himself fearlessly in the face of intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, he personally led the assault. When the radio operator was wounded and lying in an exposed position, Second Lieutenant McLaughlin, with no regard for his personal safety, ran to his assistance. While endeavoring to move the wounded man to a place of comparative safety, Second Lieutenant McLaughlin received a fatal wound. The courage and aggressiveness, as well as the compassion of mercy displayed by Second Lieutenant McLaughlin, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
