CITATION:

Bronze Star : Private First Class (then Private), 505th Parachute Infantry, for heroic conduct on 3 January 1945 near ***, BELGIUM. Private First Class MELAHN, 91mm mortar platoon wire man, in his first combat mission, showed the highest degree of courage and fortitude under the most adverse combat conditions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he constantly exposed himself to heavy enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire to repair blown out communication lines. It was while thus engaged that he was wounded by enemy artillery fire and evacuated. Private First Class MELAHN's devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Airborne Forces.
