CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Cornelius J. Moynihan, Jr. (ASN: 12063157), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 10 July 1943, approximately five miles west of ****. Sergeant Moynihan moved his rifle squad across open terrain under heavy enemy rifle and machine gun fire to a point less than 50 yards from a hostile machine gun nest and reduced the enemy position. Sergeant Moynihan continued his advance on enemy positions, and, although mortally wounded in a counter-attack by enemy *** tanks, refused to be evacuated by remained in action with his squad, against superior enemy forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
