CITATION:

Officer of the Order of the British Empire : 1 Nov 44 - Jan 45

For outstanding service and devotion to duty.

Lt.Col. NICKLIN was one of the original members of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. On taking over command of the Bn just prior to 1st Nov 1944 he was ordered to take strong action to rectify certain aspects of the Bn's life which were not satisfactory. In spite of considerable difficulties, by sheer determination, enthusiasm and great devotion to duty he has raised the efficiency of the Bn as a fighting unit to a very high level during the period Nov 1944 to Jan 1945.

His great achievement in this connection during this short period has been remarkable.

His example and tact has further largely contributed to the smooth working and unparalleled success which has bet the inclusion of a Canadian Bn in a British Brigade.

Through the present campaign his example of courageous leadership has been an inspiration to all who have come in contact with him.
