CITATION:

Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Special Warfare Operator First Class (SEAL) Robert J. O'Neill, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Mission Support Site Team Leader while assigned to a Joint Task Force in direct support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM from 9 June to 10 June 2008. Petty Officer O'Neill led a reconnaissance mission into an enemy stronghold to stop the flow of foreign fighters into the area of operation. He observed armed enemy fighters maneuvering on the ridgeline above him while conducting the reconnaissance of an enemy staging area. When the enemy engaged the patrol with heavy machine gun fire, mortars, and rocket-propelled grenades, he immediately and aggressively positioned himself to engage the threats. Petty Officer O'Neill completely exposed himself to effective enemy fire twice to establish and maintain communications with close air support. Additionally, his actions enabled the Joint Terminal Attack Controller to conduct air strikes onto the enemy who were in superior fighting positions and decisively turned the outcome of the fight. Petty Officer O'Neill displayed extraordinary leadership and judgment under fire throughout the battle. By his bold initiative, daring actions, and complete dedication to duty, Petty Officer O'Neill reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
