Hello. Can anyone help me locate a photograph of Craftsman William Henry Devine ('A' Sqdn 1st SAS)who was killed during operation Houndsworth in France 20th july 1944. I have looked on the SAS website and got lots of info for my friend (his daughter) who is now in her late 60s and in bad health. I have discovered his burial site and have pictures of the grave plus photos of men he was with that day, but unfortunately I cant find a picture of him. My friend never knew her dad and has never seen a photo. I would love to find a picture of her father so does anyone know where I might be able to download one please.
Regards
Vanessa

Look on this site for a thread by Willaim Oakes and send him a message. His father was a radio operator with the SAS in WW2. He has much imformation on the SAS of that time. Good luck.

I gave you the contact William Oakes. Did you get a reply? I have a group photograph Of Italy Squadron which was part of 2 SAS. There are no names listed on it. But I seem to remember that someone on this site has put that phooto up here and listed the names for it. My father is listed there.
You will have to look at every thread that has a photo logo next to it. Good luck. Graham.

Hi.
Yes he did thanks. He didn't have a photo himself but was contacting someone on my behalf. I am awaiting further corespondence from him in the hope he has managed to track a photo down. Thanks again

Well done Vanessa,
I have met William oakes once. He was a company lawyer I believe. He has lots of imformation. My father was mainly in 2 SAS C Squadron but he spent a short while in A squadron in first SAS. The trouble is these people did not talk much about their exploits - they seemed to take their work for granted as nothing special. My father died in 1997 and I am only now discovering his past in more detail.
All the best Graham.

This is an interesting document detailing the incident where they were killed:

Thanks Pete.
I've seen that interesting document before and have passed it on to my friend (the daughter of William Devine).
Thanks Anyway

hello again, if you do not get anywhere with Mr oakes let me know as I have another contact - but I cannot give his name to you and I shall have to telephone him on your behalf. he is not always in the UK. Graham

Thanks for that. Mr Oakes did say he was passing my query to someone who may have a photo and that this person was out of the country at the moment. He also said he would be back in touch but at this moment in time I have heard no more from him. I wonder if the person he was speaking about is the same person you are thinking of.

William Oakes is re-locating to Scotland so you may have to remind him or give him more time. Anyway i will phone my contact as soon as he is back. Graham
