CITATION:

Military Medal : Operation "FLOUNCED", Ref Map Yugoslavia 1/100000 sheet 109. Night Attack on Pt.622 -0960 - 3 Jun 44.

Sgt. Pickering was the Sec Comd of the leading sec in this attack. He led his men skilfully through a gap in the minefield whilst under very heavy fire and assaulted a pill box which had been holding up the advance of the rest of the Tp. By this time the Tp had suffered nearly 50% casualties but Sgt Pickering led his section over the hill and consolidated in enemy slit trenches on the far slope. During this stage they were heavily counter attacked from the rear. Sgt. Pickering's Tp Comd was severely wounded by heavy fire, and in order that he could be pulled back Sgt Pickering volunteered to go forward to draw the fire onto himself. He not only stood out in the moonlight drawing fire onto himself, but succeeded in wiping out a MG which was firing at him, with his Tommy Gun. Throughout he showed magnificent courage and a determination to close with the enemy.
