Silver Star : The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Jack K. Reed (MCSN: 444891), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Group Leader with Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, on 26 February 1945. With his squad leader seriously wounded by devastating hostile fire which had pinned down his platoon, Corporal Reed left his place of comparative safety, dragged the wounded man to the rear, and returned to lead the squad in a successful attack on a strongly defended enemy position built around several machine-gun emplacements. Leaving another man in charge, he ran back to his platoon leader with a report of the situation and led the reserve squad of the platoon to his right flank under heavy sniper and machine-gun fire. His courageous initiative and inspiring leadership reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Reed and the United States Naval Service.
