I am hoping to uncover a little more information relating to my grand-uncle, Sir Ambrose Joseph McGonigal, MC (Special Air Service Regiment) and his brother Eoin, who was killed in North Africa.

I also see there was an American connection in the form of an Easy Company Private William T McGonigal Jr. who was killed on D-Day.

Their three respective links on this site are:

Eoin:

Ambrose:

William:

If anyone out there as any idea about how to even begin to research these amazing individuals I would love to hear from you.

All the best,

B McG

Hello,

In my reading I have come across Eoin quite a bit. He was killed on Operation Squatter in November 1941. Apparently he was the one who recommended Blair Mayne to Stirling in the early days.

There's quite a bit written about Operation Squatter - have you tried "Stirlings Men" - Eoin gets a mention in that.

Also he gets a mention in the National Archives book "Special forces in the desert war" in relation to both the Gazala/Tmimi parachute raids (Operation Squatter) and the 11 commando action on the litani river.

I also have a Scots Guards Magazine that refers to Eoin in a tribute to Danny Hill

If you PM me with your e-mail address I will send it to you.

Hope this was of help,
Sam
