CITATION:

Silver Star : For gallantry in action on Corregidor Island, 19 February 1945. Elements of Sergeant Schmidle's company were occupying a defensive position around an observation post when they were hit by a numerically superior force of enemy. The attack carried the enemy well inside the defense an, due to weapon stoppages and need for reorganization, the unit had to withdraw. On order of his platoon leader, Sergeant Schmidle withdrew his squad which, due to casualties, had only four effectives. Sergeant Schmidle with utter disregard for his own life, took up a dangerous flank position, whence he repulsed several enemy rushed. He held this position until mortally wounded and without asking or accepting help crawled to the aid station where he died. Sergeant Schmidle's courage, initiative, and coolness under fire, materially aided in the reorganization of his unit for successful attack on the enemy and constituted the finest of soldierly performance on duty.
