CITATION:
Navy Cross : The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private Robert G. Schneider (MCSN: 351530), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with Company B, FIRST Marine Raider Battalion, during the enemy Japanese attack on Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of 13 and 14 September 1942. In the face of continual enemy machine gun and mortar fire, Private Schneider, on his own initiative, took charge of and assisted in carrying ammunition to our machine guns and mortars along Lunga Ridge, thereby enabling these guns to keep in action throughout the early morning hours during the height of the attack. His indomitable fighting spirit and fearless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
